　　It seems most people would be better off if they could shorten their commutes to work,spend more time with friends and family and less of it watching television(something the average American spends a whopping two months a year doing,and is hardly jollier for it).
　　语法点：主语从句;状语从句;并列结构;指代。
　　重难点：识别并别的结构;理清并列的成分。
　　解析：
　　Step1：断长句
　　面对长难句，先将其变为独立的短句，以便理解。
　　①It seems most people would be better off//②if they could shorten their commutes to work,spend more time with friends and family and less of it watching television//③(something the average American spends a whopping two months a year doing,and is hardly jollier for it).

　　依照断句原则：长度适中+结构完整，将长句子切分成三个小短句，便于理解。

　　Step2：抓主干
　　整个长难句的主干为：
　　Most people would be better off.(主谓宾结构)
　　大多数人会过得更好。
　　Step3：理结构
　　①It seems most people would be better off
　　本句省略了从属连词“that”，补全后应为It seems that most people would be better off.
　　理解：大多数人似乎会过得更好。
　　②if they could shorten their commutes to work,spend more time with friends and family and less of it watching television
　　If引导的条件状语从句，可直接按照顺序理解。其中“shorten their commutes to work”、“spend more time with friends and family”以及“less of it watching television”构成并列结构，并列连词为and，可简单理解为A,B and C的形式。
　　由于“less of it watching television”应该与前半部分的“spend more time with friends and family”构成并列，因此可以看出其中省略了(spend)一词，而“it”则指代“time”，还原后应为“spend more time with friends and family and(spend)less of time watching television”.“watching television”为现在分词短语作定语，修饰time。
　　译文：如果他们能够缩短上班的通勤时间，花费更多的时间陪伴家人和朋友，并且花费更少看电视的时间。
　　③(something the average American spends a whopping two months a year doing,and is hardly jollier for it).
　　括号在英文中同样起到解释说明的作用，是对于“watching television”的进一步解释说明，其中并列连词“and”所并列的结构为“spends a whopping two months a year doing”、“is hardly jollier for it”。
　　译文：普通的美国人一年花费高达两个月的时间去看电视，但几乎并不会因此而感到快乐。
　　Step4：定句意
　　如果人们能够缩短他们的工作时间和看电视的时间,而花更多的时间跟朋友和家人在一起，这似乎会让他们的生活品质变得更好(普通的美国人一年花费高达两个月的时间去看电视，但几乎并不会因此而感到快乐)。
　　词汇补充：
　　commute上下班路程，上下班往返
　　whopping巨大的，很大的
