高考英语语法：垂悬结构一定是错误的吗？

记得在某一年高考前夕，美国物理学家霍金曾在其新浪微博发文，预祝考生取得成功。下面我们来看他的微博内容：

　　其中第二段的句话出现了垂悬分词的情况，下面笔者来详述这一问题。

　　垂悬分词1. Growing up, my parents placed a high value on education and I am grateful for the limitless opportunities provided by my studies.

　　解析：我们看到，句首的短语growing up是一个现在分词短语。一般来说，放在句首的分词短语的动作发出者，即分词的逻辑主语，应该与句子主语保持一致。换言之，句子主语应该也是分词短语的逻辑主语。根据这一规则，本句的句子主语my parents应该是growing up的逻辑主语，按照这一思路，growing up就应翻译为“在我父母的成长过程中”。然而，结合上下文语境，我们发现，这样的翻译其实误读了growing up，它的逻辑主语应该是指霍金本人，是指“在霍金的成长过程中”。因此，上面英文句子的意思应该是：

　　由此可见，分词growing up的逻辑主语是I，而句子主语是my parents，显然二者并不一致。对于这种分词的逻辑主语与句子主语不一致的情形，英文有一个专门的术语，叫作“垂悬分词”(dangling participle)。有读者一直不理解为什么这种情况会称为垂悬分词。我们姑且这样理解：dangle是“悬挂，悬空”的意思，当一个分词找不到其动作发出者时，这个分词就如同悬空的物体一样没着没落的。垂悬分词的逻辑主语不明确，进而导致句意模棱两可，存有歧义。而英文表达是力求的，因此，垂悬分词一般来说是一种语法上有错误的结构。但是，鼎鼎大名的物理学家且身为英语母语人士的霍金为什么还会写出这样“存在明显语法错误”的句子呢?下面笔者来分析这背后的原因。

　　垂悬分词的逻辑主语

　　的语言学家史蒂文·平克(Steven Pinker)曾经指出，如果分词短语的逻辑主语是作者本人，那么分词是可以垂悬的(More generally, a participle can dangle when its implied subject is the writer.)。他列举了下面两个例子(即下文例2中的a句和例3中的a句)。

　　2. a. Turning the corner, the view was quite different.转过拐角，我发现景致十分不同。

　　解析：显然，句子主语the view是无法作turning the corner的逻辑主语的，也就是说，分词短语的逻辑主语与句子主语不一致，turning the corner是一个垂悬分词。对于这种垂悬分词，我们将其逻辑主语理解为作者本人，也就是I，因此我们可以将a句进行这样的改写：

　　b. Turning the corner, I saw that the view was quite different.

　　在b句中，句子主语I同时充当turning the corner的逻辑主语，即表示I turned the corner。
