高中英语阅读中Otherwise的使用

　　在国际高中学习课程中有大量的人物传记和文学作品需要阅读，经常会出现一些长难句，长难句的构成因素一般是由于句子结构复杂，词汇含义晦涩难懂，甚至里面还有大量的熟词僻义，今天我们举个otherwise,这个大家熟悉不能再熟悉，但是却不是很多人熟悉它的含义。美联英语的小编老师给大家一起看看吧。。

　　说到otherwise, 同学们会想到它的常见的意思，即：“否则”，但是otherwise在阅读当中，除了出现在句首，还经常出现在句子的其它位置，所以，对于otherwise的含义就应该要有多方面的理解了。

　　举两个简单的例子：

　　• She is not very clever, but otherwise she's a nice girl.

　　• 她并不聪明，但在其他方面，她倒是个好姑娘。

　　• The rent is a bit high, but otherwise the house is satisfactory.

　　• 这所房子租金贵了点,但在其他方面倒是令人满意的

　　• We'll get there somehow, by boat or otherwise.

　　• 我们总要设法去那里的, 乘船也好, 用其他办法也好。

　　在国际高中直通车的阅读课程中曾经出现过这样的句子，句子并不是很难，但是otherwise的出现，让很多同学对这些句子含义只能是囫囵吞枣，无法透彻理解。

　　例2：

　　• For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence.( passage2)

　　例3：

　　• In other words, there is a conventional story line in the newsroom culture that provides a backbone and a ready-made narrative structure for otherwise confusing news. (passage3)

　　解释：

　　例1：

　　• The prime difference between innovators and others is one of approach. Everybody gets ideas, but innovators work consciously on theirs, and they follow them through until they prove practicable or otherwise. (passage 5)

　　• 创新者与其他人的主要区别在于处理问题的方法。每个人都有想法，但是创新者会自觉地钻研自己的想法，并且不断努力直到证明想法切实可行，或不可实现为止。

　　• 注释：在本句当中，otherwise译成practicable的反义，即：不可实现

　　例2：

　　• For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence.( passage2)

　　• 过去很长一段时间，在美国很多地方，旅行者的突然来访总是颇受欢迎，因为没有这些旅行者的来访，生活就不免单调乏味。

　　• 注释1：在本句中，otherwise译成没有这些旅行者的话。break译成突然来访

　　• 注释2：existence 生活

　　The explorers led a dangerous existence.

　　探险家过着危险的生活

　　例3：

　　• In other words, there is a conventional story line in the newsroom culture that provides a backbone and a ready-made narrative structure forotherwise confusing news. (passage3)

　　• 换句话来说，在新闻采编室文化中存在着一种惯常的叙事套路，这种套路给新闻报道提供了一个主干框架和一个现成的故事叙事结构，如果不用这套路的话，新闻报道就会变得纷繁芜杂。

　　• 注释1：在本文中，otherwise翻译成为“不用这套路”。

　　• 注释2：backbone 主干框架;ready-made 现成的。
