With novels, the reader attends mainly to the meaning of words rather than the way they are printed on the page, whereas the 'reader' of a painting must attend just as closely to the material form of marks and shapes in the picture as to any ideas they may signify. (剑10 Test2 Passage3）

1) 结构分析

层次一： 

主句： with novels.....  ,( 主句①)  whereas  the reader...... signify(主句②). (whereas连接两句话，前后对比)

层次二：   

主句①内部：

主体：the reader attends mainly to the meaning of words rather than the way

修饰1：with novel （介短做状语，修饰整个主句）
